Celtic Oktoberfest: Day 4

It’s yet another travel day for us. We’re heading to Galway…yes back to good ole Ireland…and the other side of the country. We’re going all the way west via two trains (with a transfer in Dublin…and two different train stations). Also, did you know it’s Taco Tuesday…we must get tacos…or something of the Mexican cuisine variety.

We had some time before catching our train out of Belfast. The day started with another breakfast at Maggie Mays (different location this time). I changed it up and got the Breakfast Panini (sausage and egg). It’s a lot of bread, but it was still pretty delicious and a lighter breakfast.

After breakfast, we stopped at a cute little book shop (Books Paper Scissors) near the museum. Didn’t find anything I wanted though. My new souvenir through my travels has been postcards. They’re light-weight and easy to store. I’m not talking your generic average postcard you can get in any store. I’m talking unique postcards that are made locally (usually handmade) or just different than your typical shiny  generic postcard. I find that those are more easily found in boutique book stores or shops that sell locally made things. But no like finding anything I liked so, we moved onto the Ulster Museum.

The museum was free, bonus! They also apparently ran out of English guides (they were in the midst of a guide redesign). During our trip to London, Anne and I discovered a good way to do massive museums was to grab a guide and follow it through to the must-sees. Along the way, you usually ending seeing some other pretty cool stuff too and you’re not stuck at the museum all day (works great when you have a bit of a time crunch…and we had a train to catch).

One of the first things we saw were the wicker dragons flying above. These were pretty cool. There were two of them. Gave us thoughts of Game of Thrones (they’re dragons!). There was a bunch of other cool things we saw as well. It’s a pretty good museum. We even got asked our opinion after we were done. A pretty good gift shop as well. That’s where I got my handmade (they looked that way anyway) postcards.

Then it was back to the train station we went. Dublin here we come! We took the train ride to both catch up on our journals. Travel days, especially on a train, are great for this. We had just under and hour to catch our next train (at a different station).

We made a pit stop at Boojum, which is Dublin’s answer to Chipotle/Qdoba. And it was Taco Tuesday, so we had to get some deliciousness. We got burritos. I’m not usually the burrito type. I normally go the burrito bowl or tacos route. After grabbing our tacos, we made our way to the next train station via taxi. Onto the next train and we were off to Galway, on the Western coast of Ireland.

We checked into our AirBnb (such a cute place) after our arrival and after freshing up a bit, we headed out to dinner. We had reservations at Loam (it has a Michelin Star). Ireland has a surprising amount of Michelin Star restaurants. It was reasonably priced and we could actually get reservations so, here’s to celebrating with good food. As much as we wanted more courses, we were just too full. We stuck with their 3-course dinner (and a bottle of wine).

There was really only two options for each course so that was an easy decision as to what we were going to order. Anne would get more of the veg-centric dishes and I would get everything else. This is why we get along. We get to try everything; we just didn’t have the stomach for a 7-course tasting menu (but it looked delicious from the tables we saw that go it). And OMG, were we full afterwards, but so worth it. But now, it was bed time. It was a good thing that “home” was only a 15-17 minute walk away.

Tomorrow would be filled with another day trip. This time, we were going out to see the Cliffs of Moher. I’m not sure the weather was going to work with us, but it’s a must-see. They are very majestic.
