Celtic Oktoberfest: Day 5

Hello Galway! It’s Cliffs of Moher day. My last trip here (back in May) was amazing. It was sunny (bordering on hot…it’s was hot) and the Cliffs were splendid. Today was not destined to provide such nice weather. We were traveling to the Cliffs via the Galway Tour Company.

But first, breakfast at my favorite cafe in Galway, the Jungle Cafe (it’s cash only, and conveniently close to the bus station). The vibe at the Jungle Cafe is very chill. It’s a place out of place and just very nice. The staff are super awesome and you can just laze about until you’ve finished your meal or beverage. You don’t feel hurried here.

After breakfast, it was off to The Burren we went. Our tour guide was John. Our first stop, and it was quick, was at Dunguaire Castle. They hold castle banquets there (next, I’m definitely doing that!). There was just enough time to get a few good snaps, but then it was back on the bus.

We drove through Kinvara and then saw the Portal Tomb in The Burren. There was another quick stop in Kilfenora to see the High Crosses (yes, the ones you equate with Ireland). And this whole time, it’s been pretty rainy. Fingers crossed it lets up by the time we get to the Cliffs.

But before the Cliffs, we stopped in Doolin for lunch at Gus O’Connor’s Pub. It was delicious. And they are insanely prepared for the tour bus crowd. I got a chicken supreme with mushroom sauce, mashed potatoes, mashed carrots and green beans. We shared a sticky toffee pudding (soooooo good)! We, also, warmed up with Irish coffees (also delicious and we could get them to go). Picked up some local handmade chocolate as snacks for the road.

Whoo! It finally stopped raining by the time we got to the Cliffs. Though, the “scenic trails” were quite muddy…and slippery looking. The Cliffs were still as majestic, but a bit more grey and foggy this time around. It was also a bit windy (being cliffs, and whatnot).

The bus took the scenic route back to Galway (and it was oh, so pretty). We were hopped up with energy and wanted to enjoy a bit of Galway before our next travel day (yes…tomorrow). We weren’t quite hungry yet and Galway is great for live music. We hopped into An Púcán some trad (traditional Irish music). Then it was off to Quay Street Kitchen for dinner (yum mussels!).
