Superkhana International

Superkhana International (located in Logan Square) opened back in mid-July. But, it just finally hit my radar (I get a lot of emails about restaurants and food in the city overall) now. The menu looked amazing and I’d heard good things, so I had to try it. Now, as much fun as eating alone is, it’s more fun with another human when I can order more food. In steps my friend Mikel.

Per their website, it is “a modern spin on classic Indian dishes, [it] is a collaboration based on a mutual love of the Indian kitchen and local food.” It’s in a small, unfamiliar to me, pocket of Logan Square. I had almost thought it was in Avondale.

Walking in, the place was cute and nice. It had trendy vibes and a good atmosphere (I know, that sounds pretty redundant). We were asked if we had any reservations, which we didn’t, but there was plenty of seats available. We took some bar seats though. I always find it’s a different experience there versus a table and honestly, I don’t mind the bar, which also wasn’t too crowded. It was a Tuesday night, maybe that was it. Below are a few views of the interior.

The hostess was nice. And the bartender (also our server), I think her name was Jane, was amazing. She helped with some recommendations and was able to explain the dishes. She had great details about the food and the different dishes and was definitely part of the Superkhana story for us.

So, let’s get down to business. What did we order? He are all the things we eat and drink. 1. I started my night with an Old Forester Rye and Ginger Beer. This highball was made perfectly and was a delicious drink to enjoy.

2. For appetizers, we got the dhokla & sweet potatoes and the chana chaat. They were both delicious, but I would always choose the chana chaat to enjoy with everyone (or really just by myself). It comes out even more perfect after you’ve had the dhokla. The execution on the sweet potatoes were perfection.

3. Our entree was The Bombay Sandwich, which was Mikel’s choice, because it said “with…many, many things” for toppings. One of the most amazing grilled cheeses ever. All the “strange” ingredients world really well together. There were beets in there, and you couldn’t even tell (no dirty, “earthy”, taste at all. And the ketchup…the ketchup was everything you need. I’m usually on the fence about tomato soup or ketchup with my grilled cheese, but this…was awesome. So their ketchup, which in all honesty is a ketchup, is a blend of banana ketchup (Filipino in nature), ketchup (regular ol’ ketchup), and curry ketchup (the best ketchup). I’m not a grilled cheese ketchup person, but this was great…especially since my grilled cheese contained many, many other things.

4. We weren’t really going to get dessert, but we had to at least “glance” at the menu. In which case, we ended up trying the chai ($3) with ice cream sandwiches ($4). The ice cream sandwich was a bit of nostalgia (think Indian vanilla wafer, just not super strong on the vanilla, but the consistency was there). Take a bit of the ice cream sandwich and follow it with a sip or swallow of chai. It was the perfect combination.

Overall, Superkhana International was a fantastic experience, partly due to the awesome service from Jane (we’re just going to say that’s her name) and the delicious flavors of the food. Their price point is a little on the high side, but I suppose if you go with another human and share some food, don’t get drinks or dessert, it’s a bit more affordable. I’ve got to say, the pizza looked fantastic and we’re probably going to try that next.
